So 2020 happened! It would be an understatement to say last year didn’t go according to plans. I’m not gonna go into the details of the emotional roller coaster that was the lockdown. But I had a roof over my head, food in the fridge and creative projects to keep me busy. Looking at the numbers across the globe and how the pandemic has affected people who look like me, I’m deeply aware of how privileged I am. I hope that once we reach the post-vaccine phase and can meet each other again that we can dedicate ourselves to ending the many injustices and inequalities that the pandemic exacerbated.

On a personal level, I was going to declare 2021 as the year of joy but then for a moment, I was like, “maybe that’s too ambitious? Let’s not jinx it!” But that’s not a good way to go about life so I really hope you all find joy in this coming year despite all the scary things that are still happening.

For my theme though, 2021 is going to be the year of YES! I probably could have found a better and perhaps deeper word but let’s keep it simple. I’ve just handed in my application for my degree certificate so I’m am finally graduating! I have a lot of mixed feeling about the last 3+ years of my studies and that’s gonna take some time to work through but one thing is for sure, this is the start of a new chapter. For me to truly embrace this new stage of my life I need to say YES to things that I at times try to dodge. So YES to risks, both professional and personal, YES to uncomfortable conversations, YES to being vulnerable and YES to adventure. I have no idea where this is gonna take me or what kind of year 2021 is gonna turn out to be but let’s just take it one day at a time.

What are your themes for 2021?
