Ever since I came across the work of artists like Augusta Savage and Lois Mailou Jones, I’ve been really curious about the Harlem Renaissance. I’m still at the beginning of my little research project but the more artists from this era I discover, the more intrigued I am. James Van Der Zee’s body of work is my latest fascination. Especially his wedding portraits, the couples always look so glamorous!

Even though Van Der Zee photographed many celebrities during his time, it’s the photographs of ordinary people wanting to document family events and milestones that are the most captivating. There’s an authenticity that probably comes from living in the community he was documenting.

I definitely want to find out more about his work so please share any tips on books or documentaries in the comments.
